Raffle quilt with minkee backing

Here’s the next minkee backed quilt.  A raffle quilt, I was asked to do whatever I liked with it.  I knew the rail fence blocks on the front wouldn’t show much quilting, but I also knew that it was going to be seen by lots of people and the back would show the quilting.  So, this is what I came up with.  I have to say, I LOVE minkee!  It quilts up beautifully!!  I have a donation baby quilt I need to finish by next weekend, and I’m going to get me some of this!

  1. I have a long arm and have trouble with the dark minkee pulling through so I see it on the lighter top fabric, it makes the thread look varigated. Have you ever heard of this? What size needle do you use on your machine?

  2. No, I haven’t heard that – but these are the first few projects I’ve done with minky on the back. The last 2 minky projects used dark brown minky on the back and light cotton Moda fabric on top and I didn’t see that problem. I used an 80/20 blend of Legacy batting and I used a size 18 needle. Maybe going to a smaller needle would help you? Also, I’m not using ballpoint needles – I use Groz-Beckert sharp needles. Also, the weave of the top fabric might have something to do with it too.
